Serving Older Adults In Chautauqua County
May is Older Americans Month — a national observance established in 1963 to recognize the contributions, resilience, and lasting impact of older adults in our communities.
Here in Chautauqua County, older adults are our neighbors, our family members, and the backbone of communities they've spent a lifetime building.
United Way is proud to invest in the organizations that make sure they are supported — and this month, we want you to know more about three of them:
Chautauqua Adult Day Services
For older adults who benefit from structured daytime programming — and for the family caregivers who support them — Chautauqua Adult Day Services provides a meaningful, comprehensive day program at three locations across the county: the Taft Center and Present Center in Jamestown, and a center in Dunkirk. Their Present Center offers specialized programming for seniors living with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
United Way funds this work because we know that supporting older adults means supporting the families and caregivers around them, too.
Community Connections at Findley Lake
For older adults in rural communities, remaining independent often depends on having strong local connections and reliable support systems close to home. Community Connections at Findley Lake helps make that possible by connecting residents with services, transportation, wellness resources, Medicare counseling, volunteer assistance, and programs that help individuals continue living safely and confidently in their own homes.
United Way is proud to support Community Connections and the organization’s mission of helping older adults remain engaged, supported, and connected to the community they call home.
Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels
Serving the western end of the county for more than 55 years, Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels has built something that goes beyond food delivery. Every visit is also a wellness check — a moment of connection that helps older adults maintain their independence and ensures their neighbors know they are safe and not alone.
United Way's partnership with Dunkirk-Fredonia Meals on Wheels helps sustain that daily presence in our community.
Jamestown Area Meals on Wheels
For decades, Meals on Wheels of the Jamestown Area has delivered more than a hot meal to frail, homebound seniors and adults with disabilities across Chautauqua County. Five days a week, volunteers show up — rain, snow, or sunshine — to ensure neighbors who cannot easily leave their homes receive nutritious food, a friendly face, and the quiet reassurance that someone is checking in.
United Way is proud to support this work and the volunteers who make it possible every single day.
