ALICE is a United Way acronym which stands for “Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed."
The term represents the increasing number of individuals and families who work, but are unable to meet their basic needs, including such essentials as: food, child care, housing, health care and transportation.
Data from United Way’s ALICE research reveals a striking reality about financial hardship in our region.
In Chautauqua County, nearly half of all households are struggling to make ends meet.
18% of households live in poverty
30% of households fall into the A.L.I.C.E. category
Together, that means 48% of households in Chautauqua County are experiencing financial hardship.
These individuals may be working multiple jobs, cutting back on essential needs, or making difficult tradeoffs each month just to stay afloat.
In recognition of this often unseen population, United Way created "The ALICE Experience" — a two hour workshop which brings participants together to experience the tough choices ALICE families make daily.
During the session, participants take on the role of families navigating a simulated month with limited financial resources. Through a series of real-life scenarios and decisions, participants must balance competing demands such as rent, child care, transportation, food, and unexpected expenses.
The experience often reveals how even small disruptions — a car repair, medical bill, or missed shift at work — can create cascading financial challenges for families already living on the edge.
By stepping into these roles, participants gain a deeper understanding of the complex decisions many of their neighbors, coworkers, clients, and customers face every day.
WHY THIS EXPERIENCE MATTERS
The ALICE Experience is designed to challenge assumptions and foster meaningful conversations about financial hardship in our community.
Participants frequently walk away with:
1. A deeper understanding of the realities faced by working families
2. Greater empathy for individuals experiencing financial stress
3. Insight into the systems and barriers that affect financial stability
4. A stronger connection to the work being done by local nonprofits and community organizations
Ultimately, the experience helps individuals and organizations better understand the often unseen needs of the 48% of households in Chautauqua County who are struggling to get by.
